I wrote this yesterday on instagram.
thought i'd share today.
Like many in the last 24 hours, I've been thinking a lot about the stories I've been telling vs the stories I need to be telling in the art I create. This photo was posted on @evrlnr's Instagram on Wednesday, continuing my week on their Instagram account. The photo was taken two weeks before after a workshop session for my play, Hottentotted (a play all about the experiences had by black women in the US and the history of black women on display). Yesterday all I wanted to do was to be back in a theater with them, talking with them, especially after hearing about people's experiences yesterday of racism and sexism and more. The day this photo was taken it seemed nice that I'd have the opportunity to see this play up on its feet again and work with such talented women. Today it feels necessary that this play (and so many other plays dealing with the realities of particular populations in the US) happens again. Which is good. Because, selfishly, I need a reminder of why I should be pulling out my computer and writing when it sometimes feels like a powerless act.
